Film: Whalerider - he´s a she ?! Tuesday, November 25 @ Westeuropäische Normalzeit by root (381 reads) |
There are no real Maoris left. And those that are keep asking for more and more money for repairs. And most of them are drunk anyway. And why can’t they just ....
STOP!
Whalerider comes just in time to change the often one-sided view many New Zealanders we encountered have about the original inhabitants. No, they where not peaceful, no they are not innocent YES, they have deserved respect! The film takes a very unorthodox approach to the Kiwi "Maori-Situation" and breaks with all kinds of taboos: The old Packa should accept a small girl as his successor? Never! Never. Never?

Oddities: Sick of traveling - or missing a sloth? Saturday, June 21 @ Westeuropäische Sommerzeit by root (411 reads) |
One of the most stupid questions (at least in our mind!) we heard so far was if it was not BORING to travel for such a long time and if we were not getting sick of it all. Well in fact we don't for most of the time :) - but we do get homesick from time to time. For example seeing the green mountains of New Zealand made Brigitte very, very, very homesick. And I do feel homesick when ...

Diving: Wahlesharks, freefloating Regulators & Jummy Read Snappers Monday, June 09 @ Westeuropäische Sommerzeit by root (423 reads) |
Upon arrival in Utila you are flooded with leaflets from dive schools and hotels. When we arrived, 24h electricity was a novum for less then a week – and the impact could directly be felt when shopping around for a room. Some raised their rates from 75 Lmps to 125 Lmps to mention the most extreme case. We were happy to find quite clean rooms in “Hotel Tropical” for 50 Lmps per person. To choose a dive school involves whole lot different things to pay attention to in general. Here are some hints:
Ask how long the school has been operating, how many people ...

Info: Silent Night in Yangshou Sunday, June 08 @ Westeuropäische Sommerzeit by root (405 reads) |
Chinese love to celebrate. Almost any occasion is welcome and when they do, they most probably will use their rich arsenal of crackers normally used for New Year celebrations in the so-called free world. So in case you are bound to spend Christmas in China – take earplugs with you, as this might as well be your loudest silent night of your life! The Streets are filled with many layers of read wrapping of the crackers and dogs are desperately jelling their way through this nightmare night for them. And once in the restaurant or bar you are not safe from ambitious English teachers with their teachers forcefully enriching the air with chinglisch Christmas carols. The more alcohol is consumed the more the night gets funny and sometimes even a bit out of hand.

Myanmar is maybe the most archaic country left on this planet. Handsome men (just a little bit small) with a complexion between Indian and Thai wear longis – a kind of skirt they tow around their wrist with a simple and effective knot. Info: ¡Quattro gagne! ... ¿oda wia hast des ? Monday, May 26 @ Westeuropäische Sommerzeit by root (386 reads) |
Connect four ("Vier gewinnt" in german) is one of Patrick's favorite pastimes. It is as simple as fascinating: Try to get four in a row, diagonal, horizontal or vertical and you have won. While in China, he even received this broad game as a X-mas present - and ever since annoyed poor brigitte by beating her ten times in a row. So it came very much of a relief for Brigitte, that our host family in San Pedro had never heard about this game and was curious to find out how it worked out and who was the best. They where so excited that they managed to play three at a time and seemingly all of them won the very game :)

Tip: Great Greywhale watching in Baja California Monday, April 14 @ Westeuropäische Sommerzeit by root (451 reads) |
We are still very much touched by our greatest experience so far in Mexico: Seeing and touching gray whales near Guerrero Negro on the Baja California! We arrived in Guerrero negro on the 10th of April - this meant that the main whale season was over and only some - if any - whale remained in the bay before Guerro Negro. So we where scared that we would pay quite a bit (45 USD per person) and not see whales. A fear that was further added to by all - but one tour operater having closed the season and the only one remained refusing to offer a refund if we were not to see whales...

Tip: Macau - Europe meets Asia at its best Sunday, December 15 @ Westeuropäische Normalzeit by root (506 reads) |
Macau definitely is the strangest colony I have ever visited: In the early days of colonization, Portuguese traders had to mediate between Chinese and Japanese businessmen – who apparently did not get along; during the occupation of mainland Portugal by the Spanish under Philip II (1580 to 1640) Macau continued hissing the Portuguese flag instead of seeking independence. And in our century, Beijing turned down Portugal twice (1967 and 1974) when Lisbon tried to hand back Macau, although some of the Macau population would have wanted to join China.

Our first Destination on our trip around the world was Thailand. One of the reasons, why we decided to return there was the wonderful massage we had had two years earlier at Wat Po Traditional Massage School. So, whenever we had a stiff neck or hurting legs we dreamt of the wonderfully realaxing massage we had had there. So we returned this time to take part in the 5-day 30 hours traditional massage course. After three days we couldn't feel a thing in our body any more and then ... on the fifth day we succeded our final exams :) If you want to read more about Wat Po's traditional school, just click MORE!
